  • Critical Thinking Skills

Through our proprietary frameworks, students learn how to approach essay writing and oral communication with clarity and confidence.

  • Language Skills

We emphasize strong grammar foundations, varied sentence structures, and the use of precise, appropriate vocabulary.

  • Socio-emotional Skills

Students will master the use of pathos to persuade, connect, and move their audience, whether in writing or speech.

Lower Secondary English

We believe long-term success starts with strong foundations! Our Lower Secondary English class is design to build just that - solid, stable foundation that last. We focus on imparting transferable skills that set students up for success! It prepares students not only academically but holistically! Expect around 45 minutes of homework each week. Physical and digital notes will be provided - but spoon-feeding is not our culture.

  • Tuesday 5-7pm, Instructor: Mr Ryan Goh

  • Thursday 5-7pm, Instructor: Mr Ryan Goh

  • Saturday 9.30am-11.30am, Instructor: Mr Ryan Goh

  • Sunday 9.30am-11.30am, Instructor: Mr Ryan Goh

  • Critical Thinking & Argumentation

Students will develop the ability to craft compelling, well-reasoned arguments using our proprietary frameworks. They will learn how to take a position on an author’s stand, evaluate opposing views, and sharpen their persuasive abilities.

  • Current Affairs & General Knowledge

Exposure to key global and local issues (such as climate change, politics, and socio-economic debates) is integral. This helps students develop a well-rounded perspective on contemporary issues and prepare for GP essays.

  • Language & Communication Skills

With an emphasis on precise language use, students will improve their ability to communicate clearly in both written and oral forms, mastering GP’s rigorous language demands.

Y3/Y4 IP English

We recognize that different IP schools have unique focuses, but our programme gears students up for A Level General Paper success from the start. Unlike most JC students, who begin preparing for GP only in JC1, our IP Year 3 and 4 students build strong foundations early, and many achieve high A’s in GP. Our programme includes regular debates, helping students think on their feet and express complex ideas confidently. This experience builds both intellectual depth and emotional intelligence. Students will have 1 hour of homework per week, and will actively engage in analyzing authors' perspectives and crafting intelligent, compelling arguments.

  • Tuesday 7.30pm - 9.30pm, Instructor: Mr Darrell Tan

  • Saturday 9.30am - 11.30am, Instructor: Mr Darrell Tan

  • Sunday 9.30am - 11.30am, Instructor: Mr Darrell Tan

  • Writing

We teach students how to excel in Continuous Writing and Situational Writing by developing structured, coherent essays. Whether it's crafting creative personal recounts or producing clear, purposeful situational pieces, our students master the art of writing with precision, engaging their readers through advanced vocabulary and varied sentence structures.

  • Comprehension

We break down comprehension papers into systematic, scaffolded skills that help students tackle questions on vocabulary, inference, and summary. With a focus on understanding both narrative and non-narrative texts, students learn to interpret meaning, analyze language, and summarize key ideas efficiently under time constraints.sc

  • Oral Communication

In preparation for the oral exam, students engage in rigorous practice sessions, improving their ability to respond fluently and thoughtfully during planned responses and spoken interactions. We emphasize clear articulation, persuasive argumentation, and confident delivery.

Upper Secondary English

Our programme targets key components of the O Level English syllabus. Throughout the programme, students receive both physical and digital notes to supplement their learning. They will also complete about 1 hour of homework weekly, designed to stretch their skills. Our focus on continuous feedback and intensive practice ensures that by the time they sit for their O Levels, students are fully prepared to excel.

  • Monday 5pm - 7pm, Instructor: Mr Darrell Tan

  • Saturday 12pm - 2pm, Instructor: Mr Darrell Tan

  • Sunday, 12pm - 2pm, Instructor: Ms Delphne Tan

  • Advanced Argumentation and Critical Analysis

Students learn to construct sophisticated, multi-layered arguments, evaluate nuanced perspectives, and defend positions with depth, all essential for scoring well in GP essays.

  • In-Depth Current Affairs Mastery

We delve deep into global and local issues, fostering students’ ability to discuss complex topics like geopolitics, climate policy, and ethical dilemmas, enhancing both essay writing and comprehension skills.

  • Language Precision

Our programme sharpens students' ability to communicate with clarity and precision, vital for excelling in GP comprehension and essays.

General Paper

Our JC1 and JC2 programme prepares students for the rigors of the A Level General Paper with an advanced approach. We push our students beyond the basics, focusing on higher-level critical thinking, complex argumentation, and comprehensive exam readiness. Our students engage in intensive debates, honing their quick-thinking and analytical skills, while building intellectual resilience and confidence. Our JC programme is rigorous, with challenging assignments to ensure that students are thoroughly prepared for A Level success.

  • What are Hybrid lessons?

Hybrid lessons take place either in-person at Block 502 or 505, Bishan Street 11, or online via Zoom. Students joining via Zoom will receive a link at the start of each lesson. In-person students are encouraged to bring a learning device (iPad, laptop, etc.) as activities will involve platforms like Padlet, Google Forms, Google Docs, and Kahoot. Whether attending in-person or virtually, learning remains equally engaging. Zoom students are required to turn on their cameras and are frequently asked to present answers to ensure full participation. Since the COVID-19 period, hybrid lessons have consistently produced stellar results.

  • What if students can’t attend a lesson?

If a student cannot attend, they can join another lesson in the same week via Zoom, subject to teacher availability. If slots are open, they may attend in-person with the teacher’s permission. If no alternative slot works, a recording of the lesson will be provided, and the student can follow up with the teacher for clarifications.

  • Are there paid trials available?

Paid trials are available at 50% off for Ryan’s and Delphne’s classes, with only one trial permitted per student. However, trials are not available for Darrell’s lessons. Instead, a recorded lesson can be sent upon request. Darrell’s teaching style and methods are prominently showcased on TikTok (@verbaldarrell) and at www.crosswardplus.com.

  • What is the withdrawal policy?

For students paying for one term, no refunds will be given upon withdrawal. For those who sign up for two or more terms, they may withdraw before the start of the new term by giving one month’s notice and will be refunded for the remaining terms. Any discounts applied to previous lessons will be deducted from the refund. Students are required to complete their current term or forfeit the remaining lessons.

  • What are the registration fees?

New students are required to pay a one-time registration fee of $100. However, if they sign up before 1 January 2025, the fee will be waived as part of the early bird promotion.

  • Should Crossward students purchase Crosswardplus Digital Resources from www.crosswardplus.com?

Yes, all Crossward students benefit from Crosswardplus digital resources as supplementary materials. These resources reinforce the skills and frameworks taught in weekly lessons and offer ample practice to strengthen and sharpen their abilities. In 2024, students who used Crosswardplus resources demonstrated significant improvement compared to previous years.

  • Will there be homework given?

Lower secondary students will have 45 minutes of homework per week, while upper secondary and JC students will have 1 hour. However, it is the student's responsibility to complete it, as teachers do not enforce homework completion. Those who submit their homework receive detailed feedback and benefit far more than those who don't.

  • Will notes be provided?

At Crossward, we believe in fostering independent thinking, so we do not spoon-feed students. While some notes will be provided when necessary, much of the learning happens through active participation. For example, students will engage in Padlet activities, where the teacher will provide sample responses and clear instructions. These virtual documents and canvases are key learning materials, and students are encouraged to collate the links as part of their own study resources. Additionally, we strongly recommend students always have a notebook and pen on hand, whether attending lessons in person or virtually. Our teachers will highlight important points during lessons, making it clear when these should be jotted down. This approach ensures that students take ownership of their learning while still receiving essential guidance.
